Our Plans for the 2024 Updates

Our Plans for the 2024 Updates

If you keep up with Dungeons and Dragons news, you've probably heard about the 2024 Rules Updates released last year. Although Wizards of the Coast has been careful to avoid calling these updates a new edition, they represent a major set of changes to some of the fundamental ways that 5th edition D&D is played. In this article we will discuss our plans for these changes.

As part of our commitment to free and accessible content, we at D&D Unleashed have always released our homebrew content in as many forms as we can, including on the official D&D Beyond platform. With the 2024 Rules Updates, some changes have been made to D&D Beyond that we have to respond to. Several of you fans have contacted us to let us know that our homebrew spells were not accessible by the new 2024 versions of the character classes. Because of this, we plan to release new versions on D&D Beyond of each of our homebrew spells. The versions for these spells will be listed as "2.0 (2024 Updates)". They will include no changes except for adding the 2024 classes to the list of classes that can use the spells. However, this will take considerable time, because there’s no way to automate the process and we are still working on the final compendium, Legends of Prestige & Prowess, which is our top priority right now.

Some of you have also asked whether we will update or change any of our homebrew content itself to match the new 2024 Dungeons and Dragons Rules Updates. We do not have any plans to do so. The content of D&D Unleashed has been designed and playtested over nearly a decade alongside the original 5th edition D&D rules, but they haven't been designed or playtested alongside the 2024 rules. While you can still use them with the 2024 rules, we don't feel that it would be appropriate to change them suddenly without enough time spent on designing or playtesting those changes.

D&D Unleashed has always been intended to integrate as an expansion within the original 5th edition rules, and they will remain that way. For those of you who intend to use the 2024 Updated Rules in their entirety, we hope that you will continue to find the content in D&D Unleashed to be usable. However, we have no plans to adapt the content specifically for that purpose. Spells, monsters, prestige classes, and magic items should continue to be perfectly applicable. However, subclasses and racial statistics may be more difficult to use alongside the 2024 rules. Feel free to make your own changes to adapt them to the 2024 rules if you deem them necessary. As always, the homebrew content in D&D Unleashed exists for you to use and make your own in whatever way you think best. If you’re a fan of our content, please let us know whether you agree or disagree with this decision! If there is significant disagreement, we may change our minds.

If you aren't a fan of the 2024 Rules Updates, we hope that D&D Unleashed continues to serve as a refreshing and stable source of new content for the original 5th edition ruleset. Wizards of the Coast doesn't seem to have any plans to continue releasing content for the original ruleset, but we still do. Our final compendium, Legends of Prestige & Prowess, is still on its way. We hope you look forward to its release!

After this third and final compendium releases, we have some small supplemental content planned, but no more major compendiums. These plans may change in the future, especially if our fans express support for additional content. However, we don't intend to continue producing content simply for the sake of producing content. If you have ideas for content that you would like to see D&D Unleashed produce, especially if it ties into content we have already released, please let us know through comment or form submission.

Thank you for your support. We hope you continue to enjoy Dungeons and Dragons and D&D Unleashed, regardless of which 5th edition ruleset you use!
