D&D Unleashed on FoundryVTT
Fans of D&D Unleashed and FoundryVTT have cause to celebrate: we’re releasing the first version of a Foundry module containing our homebrew content! This module adds all the spells that we’ve released or previewed to your Foundry game as a single collection that you can search or drag-and-drop onto character sheets for quick use, so you don’t have to create them all by hand.
So what is this Foundry? Foundry Virtual Tabletop is “a standalone application built for experiencing multiplayer tabletop RPGs using a feature-rich and modern self-hosted application where your players connect directly through the browser.”
Using Foundry requires at least one person to make a one-time $50 purchase. However, after that purchase, you can host digital games for any number of players for as long as you want, without ever having to pay again. The other players don’t have to pay anything at all! There’s no subscription, and you get all the features directly upfront, with updates for stability and new features constantly being added that rival Foundry’s paid-subscription competitors. If you are already paying a subscription for similar features, purchasing Foundry can pay for itself in just a matter of months. In addition, Foundry supports community-made modules that are easy to install and use, and the community has already produced a wide swath of amazing modules for 5th edition D&D as well as a variety of YouTube tutorials on how to use Foundry, which modules are the best to install, and so much more to help each other out.
For now, you can get the module for D&D Unleashed spells using this link. Just download that zip file and unzip it to reveal the “be_dndunleashedspells” folder. Then, copy that folder and paste it inside your “/Data/modules/” folder in your Foundry data directory (likely in your Documents folder), and enable the module in the settings for your Foundry game to unlock the library of D&D Unleashed spells and add it to your game. For more information, check out the “Manually” portion of this module installation guide.
In the future, we’ll update this module with a proper manifest URL and download URL, and we will look into additional ways to distribute it. We’ll continue to update it with additional spells as we release them. We’re also planning further content modules for Foundry in the same general design, such as a module for our homebrew monsters, or one for magic items. Similarly, we’re in the process of building our Roll20 marketplace packs, but that process is lengthier and more complicated than simply handing out a link for a Foundry module, which means you might have to wait a bit longer for that to be ready, and there is no guarantee that it will ultimately be feasible, since we don’t have full control over that process.
